About: The Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve is actively managed to support the Gopher Tortoise. This is the northernmost population of this declining animal. There are over 16 miles of trails on the property. Much of the preserve is a classic sandhills pine wire grass habitat and hosts the birds commonly found in such places.
About: This 1,067 acre park contains four spring-fed lakes and the South Edisto River and is located 16 miles East of Aiken, South Carolina. The habitat includes riverine swamp and dry sand hills. There is a 3 mile nature trail and other hiking venues in the park. A scenic 1.7-mile canoe and kayak trail winds its way down the south fork of the Edisto River. Aiken State Park is a good spot to find migrant birds during spring and fall migration.
About: Audubon’s Silver Bluff Sanctuary is a 3,400-acre woodland along 2.6 miles of the Savannah River with extensive pine forests and bottomland hardwood forests; walking trails; 50 acres of lakes and ponds; 100 acres of grassland; and all manner of birds and wildlife.
